Omid Kheirabdi (born in 1992 in Tehran) is a visual artist and performer based in Rotterdam. His work critically examines late-capitalist societal relationships, decoding their oppressive mechanisms and exploring their effects on individuals. Central to his practice are questions of power, labor, global economic disparities, legal status, and Western (European) hegemony. Omid’s art challenges prevailing narratives by confronting the structures that shape our lives and calling for new possibilities of coexistence.
Omid’s multidisciplinary approach includes multimedia installations, prints, and performance art, all of which serve as tools for provoking dialogue and fostering critical reflection. Over the past two years, he has developed 'performance sessions,' inspired by Augusto Boal’s "Theater of the Oppressed" and the concept of "arte útil". These sessions, which he describes as 'art-get-togethers,' function organically and inclusively, inviting participants from diverse artistic backgrounds to co-create improvised performances through informed conversations. This approach emphasizes collective creativity and the transformation of traditional audience roles into active participants, fostering a shared experience that deeply impacts relationships and dialogue.
He holds an MFA in Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague, 2022) and an MA in Interior Architecture from the Maastricht Academy of Architecture (2019). His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Leuven, Belfast, Rotterdam, and Maastricht. He has also participated in residencies and workshops across Europe, including the Research Academy program "Performative Interventions" at ZHdK in Zurich, where he explored the intersection of resistance against global capitalism and performance art.
Currently, Omid resides at TimeWindow in Rotterdam, where he continues developing his ongoing research.
